Medical coding is the assignment of letters and numbers to specific medical and diagnostic phrases; each combination representing an individual diagnosis or procedure. These codes enable the health care industry to collect, process, and send information more effectively. The program prepares students for various roles such as inpatient or outpatient coders, auditors, clinical documentation specialists, insurance evaluators, case reviewers, teachers, or compliance officers. The curriculum includes courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, computer literacy, basic procedure coding, medical coding, and health information management. Graduates will be eligible to take the CPC (Certified Professional Coder) exam offered by the AAPC, qualifying them for entry-level coding positions in healthcare facilities and provider clinics and offices. The program is designed to meet the needs of students at different stages of their careers and can be completed in two semesters.
